"Chemical Scum That Dream of Distant Quasars" - it is a famous phrase used by David Deutsch to describe humans. I like it for multiple reasons. One, it is coined by Deutsch, whose books have influenced me and my thinking - even though Deutsch himself argues that we shouldn't judge an idea by its author, but by its content. Two, it shows the multidisciplinary nature of our existence and our thoughts - scum is biological, dreams are philosophical and electrical, and quasars are metaphysical and astronomical. Three, pursuit of knowledge and wealth creation with relentless optimism is a great summary of the quest we are on, as intelligent beings.
